Daryl Angel Interview

 Photos by Ryan Flynn

Have you been in San Jose your whole life?

Since I was two.

Where were you before that?

New Mexico. I was born in this small town called Las Vegas, New Mexico, like two hours away from Santa Fe.

Do you know what brought your mom to San Jose?

Well, my brothers basically. She was out there in New Mexico for a little bit and she hadn't left my brothers behind in SJ, but she had to come back for them. I don’t want to get too personal.

What makes San Jose so good?

Well there’s definitely a really good skate scene here. So there’s never the problem of not having someone to skate with. And there’s tons of skate spots. Other than that, other than skateboarding, people are pretty cool as long as you’re cool. It’s a big city, bigger than you’d expect. You have good food. I don’t know. I feel comfortable here. My family’s here, my mom, my brothers. I got my friends here.
Are you a Sharks fan?

Yeah, actually we just went down to Agenda and while we were down there we went to a Sharks game. The Kings versus the Sharks on Monday night. The Sharks won it.

They’re killing it right now aren’t they?

Yeah dude. It’s pretty cool. We were sitting in one of those box seats and we were raging, drinking and yelling up there. Then there’d be Kings fans looking up and yelling up at us, like, “Shut the fuck up!” all pissed off. But whatever, we were having a good time and they were ready to fight.

How long ago did you find out you were going pro?

Maybe like two or three months ago.

That wasn’t too long after you got on Habitat right?

It was maybe a month after I got on. They were just talking about graphics and stuff and I was like, “Whoa, I’m gonna get a board? Fuck, alright.” But I’m the type of dude that doesn’t really believe things until they actually happen, so I was kind of not that…I mean, I was obviously psyched, but I was just like “Alright, we’ll see.” Then it came out and I was like, “Fuck, really?” I don’t think it’s really dawned on me yet, because I haven’t really went out and skated as a professional skater yet. Does that make sense?

Yeah, like you haven’t ridden your own board or been in a pro contest yet.

Yeah, and I don’t know I haven’t gone to a skatepark and skated my own board. I’m definitely psyched. I made it, you know?

Prior to Habitat telling you that you were going pro, had you been worried that it might never happen and becoming a forever am? It seemed like you kind of kept getting passed over.

For sure. Yeah, I mean I did think about it and I was like, “Fuck, I’m probably gonna be a man am,” but whatever, I still get to skate for fun.

At any point when someone got announced as going pro, were you questioning it, like, “Him? He went pro?”

I’m like that all the time. But I mean, whatever. To each his own, I guess.

You want to air anyone out as going pro too soon?

Haha, I don’t know. I think it’s weird when they turn little kids pro, but I mean that’s what you gotta do to sell boards nowadays. But other than that, whatever.

How’s the Habitat video coming along?

It’s going good dude. I think I got maybe 50 percent for footage and we have until June, so I’m pretty psyched on having a part in one of those videos.

Are you going to have a full part?

At first I was thinking whatever, I’ll just film a little one-minute part, maybe share a part or something. Since they pushed the deadline back, why not just fully try to go for it. Full part.

What’s that make, four full parts in little over a year?

Haha, no dude. All that Skate Mental stuff was pretty old footage actually. Then there was just that Nike video. So that was two.

How was your New Year’s?

Oh it was great. I hung out with my family and we got wasted. It was pretty cool. Then… yeah, hung out with my friends and family.

You get into anything scandalous?

No, I keep it pretty mellow. I mean, I’m pretty dark, but not when I’m home. I just keep it mellow when I’m home.

What do you mean by dark?

Well everyone has a dark side, you know?

Are you a dark drunk?

Yeah, to a certain extent. I can get into some sketchy shit, but not like drugs or anything. I don’t really want to talk about it. I don’t know. Everybody just gets weird when they get drunk. Nobody’s themselves when they’re drunk. Everybody gets either really friendly or really dark or really mad. It all depends on the person. That’s all I mean really.

Yeah, and the situation counts a lot. You got any big goals or resolutions for this year?

Just film this video.

Any trips or anything?

Yeah, on Saturday I’m going on a trip with a bunch of my friends. Joe Brook has this big 15 passenger van called Big Blue. Recently, he just did this tour with the enjoi guys in it. Now we’re doing a trip where it’s all homies that live in San Jose. It’s gonna be like Jon Nguyen, Caswell, Peter Raffin and I think Strubing’s gonna come. Then just a couple other friends. We’re going to go to Vegas for a day or two then to Arizona to skate around.

Those are always the best trips, just with your friends.

Yeah I know. I’ve never really been on a trip with all my friends. I’m always going on tour with a team or something, who are my friends too, but I just mean people I’ve known for a really long time.

You planning on any more tattoos?

I don’t think so. I wish I wouldn’t have ever gotten any tattoos. I don’t regret it, but whatever. I’ve never picked anything off the wall, but at the time I got them, I wanted them. Now I’m just like, “Fuck, I wish I didn’t have anything.” I got to live with them now. At least I don’t have a neck tat that I have to live with or some stupid face tat.

So what’s next for you?

I kind of just play it by ear. I don’t like to plan things out. I just like to go with the flow and see what happens.
